Welcome to the Slappin’ Glass “Sunday Mornin’ Newsletter”, where we’re consolidating the best ideas, strategies, X’s and O’s from the world of basketball.
This week we had our heads spinning in an “X and O Extravaganza” podcast with the terrific Zak Boisvert, went a couple layers deeper into the “4 Corner Pick and Roll” Offense of Moncho Fernandez, collaborated again with Cody Toppert, and found some truly innovative sets from Europe.
Let’s dive in.
An X and O Nerdout
Zak Boisvert is well respected throughout the basketball world for his work over the years as both a high level coach and curator of one of the best basketball resources of all-time, PickandPop.net. We did our best to hold court with him in an “X and O Extravaganza” on the latest Slappin’ Glass Podcast, where we covered topic after topic of some of the most interesting offensive and defensive concepts we could dream of.
If “Small Sample Size Theater”, “Apparition Cuts” and “Bilbao Action” sound like interesting basketball concepts, then this is the podcast for you.
We also had fun with a brand new segment on the podcast called “Overrated or Underrated”… we’re definitely keeping it as part of the show going forward. Here was a teaser from that segment…
If you are enjoying the podcast, we’d really appreciate if you left a rating and reply HERE to help others find it. Thank you!
Moncho Fernandez: A Closer Look
Last week we broke down the great playbook of Coach Moncho Fernandez with his club Monbus Obradoiro in Spain. After putting out the playbook we felt there was still more to Coach Fernandez’s offensive concepts that was worth exploring, so we dove a couple levels deeper this week in our film study of the “Rules, Reads, and Actions” that make up Coach Fernandez’s “4-Corners PnR Offense”.
“ Improving the Angle”, “Flare and Drift”, “Hold and Lift” and “Defender in a Blender” are all teaching points within his attack that we explore.
And for reference, here is last week’s breakdown of Coach Fernandez’s 2020 playbook.
And here are the PDF’s of the playbook as well.
The Complete Guide to Motion Offense
We did a lot of work on PnR topics on both sides of the ball this week, but earlier in the summer we took on one of our most ambitious breakdowns by putting together a 25- minute voiceover film study of NCAA DIII Coach of the Year, Elliot Steinmetz’ 5-Out Motion Offense. As teams are looking to implement a little of both on-ball and motion concepts this season, watching Yeshiva University run their stuff is worth the time.
Best Sets of the Week
{ Igor Kokoskov - Innovative Post Actions } We’ve looked at a number of sets and actions from the Coach Kokoskov, and this week really enjoyed some of these interesting post splits and actions run after a post catch.
{ Baseline Cut Against the “Low Bump” and “High Help” } One of the more popular and effective actions on the backside of a ball screen to combat the stunting of the helpside defenders.
{ Saša Obradović - PnR Automatics Against ICE Coverage } Some nice action by Coach Obradović to gain an advantage against a “drop” or “ice” PnR coverage.
Food for Thought
We have fun collaborating with Coach Cody Toppert of Memphis. We put this breakdown of LeBron’s “Hostage Scores” together.
Francesco Nanni had a great thread looking at Maccabi’s “Hit” defense… which combines switching and trapping.
“How much did all of Daryl Morey’s trades actually help the Rockets”?
A nice thread from Coach Greg White with links to downloadable “Practice Plan Templates.”
As always, thank you for the support.
Have a great week coaching,
Dan and Pat
