Welcome to our “Sunday Mornin’ Newsletter”, where we consolidate and break down some of basketball’s best ideas, strategies, and coaches from around the world.
In this edition we’ll look at:
Euro On-Ball Continuity Actions
Josh Loeffler Podcast
Best Sets of the Week
Teams We’re Watching/Interesting Reads
Let’s dive in…
Yes… we put out TWO newsletters today. Our wives were pumped when we told them we’d be doing that this weekend.
Like many, we’re big fans of the European Ballscreen Continuity Offense, so we put together a trio of content around the “2nd Side Actions and Variations” teams run within the offense. The content includes:
Full Newsletter Breakdown
An 18+ minute Video
Free PDF’s of all the actions
You can get all 3 of these in today’s Special Edition Newsletter HERE.
We’ve been spoiled by our first two guests of 2021 on the Slappin’ Glass Podcast. Last week Coach Liam Flynn gave an absolute masterclass on defense, off-ball cutting, and communication, and this week Coach Josh Loeffler of Johns Hopkins University was as insightful and entertaining a guest as they come. You can download his full episode HERE.
Coach Loeffler is well respected as one of the game’s best teachers, recruiters, and program builders and it wasn’t very difficult to see why during our conversation. Among many things we discussed:
Dealing with Difficult Situations During a Game
Promoting Healthy Conflict on a Team
The Value of Competition
Rules, Reads, and Pace of a 5-Out Offense
And more…
Some classic 1-liners from Coach Loeffler during the episode include:
On a 1-3-1 Zone: “That is a zone that is somewhat based on genetics.”
On Defensive FG%: “Your Defensive FG% may be great but you suck on offense so who cares!?”
And this was great on the Pace of 5-Out Offense.
Next week we’re excited to welcome a former NBA and current European Pro to the podcast!
We always appreciate a quick rating and review of the show if you’re enjoying it as well, you can do so HERE. Thank you!
Best Sets of the Week
It was a great week as far as sets go, here were 3 of our favorite…
1) { Matt Langel - Colgate 45 Cuts } Our love of the “45 Cut” didn’t end with 2020. We’re glad folks got to see how good Colgate is with their off-ball cutting.
2) { Brad Stevens - Reverse Screen and Spacing } We joked in our “Year-in-Review” Newsletters that putting the name “Brad Stevens” in a Tweet was sort of a cheat code in the Twitter algorithm, but honestly, this “Reverse Screen” action the Celtics ran with a Baseline Cut would make Moncho Fernandez and Pedro Martinez proud.
3) { Deep Sweeps - Zipper Entry } In last week’s podcast with Coach Liam Flynn we spoke about the “Deep Sweep” being an action he loves in beginning a set. Here’s a good look at that in action…
Teams We’re Watching
Here are five teams we’ve enjoyed watching this week:
Charleston Southern (NCAA D1)
Australian National Team
Brose Bamberg (German BBL/Champions League)
West Liberty University (NCAA D2)
KK Partizan (Serbia/EuroCup)
